"Waiting On" Wednesday: Guests on Earth

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted here, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

Guests on Earth
By Lee Smith

Publication Date: October 15

From Barnes & Noble:

Evalina Toussaint, the orphaned child of an exotic dancer in New Orleans, is just 13 when she is admitted to Highland Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina. The year is 1936, and the mental hospital is under the direction of the celebrated psychiatrist Robert S. Carroll. His innovative program of treatment for mental and nervous disorders and addictions is based on exercise, diet, art, and occupational therapies—and experimental shock therapy.

Evalina finds herself in the company of some notable fellow patients, including Zelda Fitzgerald, estranged wife of F. Scott, who takes the young piano prodigy under her wing. Evalina becomes the accompanist for the musical programs at the hospital. This provides privileged insight into the events that transpire over the next 12 years, culminating in a tragic fire—its mystery unsolved to this day—that killed nine women in a locked ward, Zelda among them. At all costs, Evalina listens, observes, remembers—and tells us everything.

  11. Just the other day I saw a post on Tumblr about Zelda Fitzgerald, and I was shocked by what I didn't know. Not that I'm the biggest fan of her husband, but still. Wow. Definitely added this to my TBR list.

  12. Is this based on a real event - the name Zelda Fitzgerald sparked my question. I like the sound of this one, I haven't read Lee Smith before.

  17. Thanks for the link up and I see in your post from last week that Fannie F. has a new book out. Can't wait to get it for my Mom. I like her but my Mom adores her books.

  18. A good pick, a tragic story. I knew this about Zelda Fitzgerald because when I was a kid a biography about her was released and my mother and her friends all read the book and she told me something about it. The way people with issues were treated back in the day is so frightening (and women with depression or substance abuse)...we still have a long way to go to not stigmatize folks with mental disorders.
