"Waiting On" Wednesday: Friendship Bread

Friendship Bread

In Avalon, Illinois, a woman and her young daughter return home to find a plate of Amish Friendship Bread along with a bag of starter on their doorstep. There’s no note, just a yellow sticky with the words, “I hope you enjoy it.” The instructions tell them to feed the starter over a 10-day period, then bake two loaves and share the remaining starter with three other people.



At the insistence of her five-year old daughter, Julia Evarts reluctantly follows the instructions. Soon, the bread and its starter are making their way through the town of Avalon, touching the lives of its residents in ways both comical and unexpected.

    This kind of reminds me of The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake. Nice choice. Especially since I'm a sugar addict!

    With my current addiction to anything paranormal it might be a while before I read this, but it looks like a beautiful book! Great pick! The cover makes me hungry!

    I stumbled across this blog almost by accident and have been inspired to take part, so much so that I actively went out to look for a book "to look forward to". I trawled the Amazon site for pre-releases and was absolutely thrilled to bits to find that the next Earth's Children book is due to be published this year. I love this series and have been waiting for about 10 years for book 5 to be published and if it wasn't for your blog then I wouldn't have known it was due out in a couple of months. THANK YOU!!!!!! I'm so excited now, can't wait for March!

    I used to love to actually make "Friendship Bread", remember once we had 8 or 10 "starter" batches on my counter because I kept not giving it away!

    I not only like the sound of the book but this is one that can actually relate to, nice pick Jill!

    This seems like a very interesting book. We received something similar to that a few years ago, but we didn't really follow it. It seems like a very interesting idea to write about. :)

    I've actually been given Amish Friendship Bread before, it really is a remarkable experience when you think about how it starts out with one person and ends up touching so many people. I bet this is really great "slice of life" book. Thanks for sharing.

    Oh, my family have done the friendship bread song and dance. It's lots of fun-- and the bread is *delicious*, but super-hard to make. Awesome choice. :)
