"Waiting On" Wednesday: This Vacant Paradise

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted here, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

This Vacant Paradise
By Victoria Patterson
Publication Date: March 1

From Amazon:

The 1990s—Newport Beach, California. Money is God. A man’s worth is judged by the size of his boat, the make of his car. A woman’s value is assessed by the blank perfection of her quantifiable desirability: dress size, cup size, the whiteness of her teeth. And oh yes: her youth. Though Esther Wilson has the looks to marry well, things aren’t going as planned. She’s nearing her mid-30s and possibly aging out of the only role she’s equipped to play: wife to a powerful member of the elite.

In the tradition of Edith Wharton and Henry James, This Vacant Paradise recasts the important questions about our very American obsessions: class, caste, race, age, and the roles of men and women in our drive toward an ever more lofty sense of our upward mobility.

  2. Oh wow! This sounds incredible! I absolutely LOVED Wharton's House of Mirth, and this sounds sooo much like a modernized version. Thanks so much for putting it on my radar!

  4. Interesting book! I'm going to have to look into it some more. I bet it has some pretty important insights about our nation's materialism & focus on eternal youth.

  19. This Vacant Paradise sounds like it will be an important cultural commentary. Even though it is set on 1990, I'm sure that it would still apply now - 21 years later. (This makes me think of all of the "Real Housewife's of . ." shows. I hope that I get a chance to read it sometime. Thanks for posting it here .

  20. Hmmm. I really liked both Wharton's and James' examinations of these issues, but women really had so few choices a hundred years ago. I'm interested to know if the author is sympathetic toward Esther. At first glance, I don't imagine I would be, but I do think I'll check this book out.
